Alors que la bande annonce de la prochaine adaptation de The Haunted Mansion est sortie et reçoit beaucoup de réactions positives, le film de 2003 avec Eddie Murphy et réalisé par Rob Minkoff revient dans les discussions. Certains le trouvent mauvais, d’autres l’apprécient et il est aujourd’hui assez vieux pour être nostalgique. Quoi qu’il en soit, il y a des choses intéressantes à dire sur ce métrage. Pour l’occasion, voici une collection d’anecdotes sur ce film connu en France sous le nom ‘Le Manoir Hanté et les 999 Fantômes’.
Le film s’ouvre sur la fameuse phrase « Welcome Foolish Mortals », récitée en VO par Corey Burton, la nouvelle voix officielle du Ghost Host dans l’attraction après le décès de Paul Frees, le comédien d’origine. Burton n’est cependant pas crédité pour sa participation.
Le générique de début donne beaucoup d’indices sur l’intrigue aux spectateurs attentifs. Les cartes de Tarot représentent la Mort, les Amoureux et le Trois d’Epée. Plus que d’annoncer un décès, la Mort est surtout un synonyme de changement. Sur la carte des amants, la femme se transforme en squelette, symbolisant la mort d’Elizabeth et le 3 d’épée a pour signification la trahison, celle de Ramsley bien-sur.
L’adolescent qui livre les prospectus des Evers au début du film est Zach Minkoff, le neveu du réalisateur.
Plusieurs figures historiques sont disséminées dans les décors du long métrage. Michael a dans sa chambre un poster du grand magicien Harry Houdini, le buste qui active le passage secret dans la bibliothèque représente le poète italien Dante Alighieri, et l’un des tableaux changeants du couloir est un portrait équestre de Napoléon Bonaparte.
L’acteur et cascadeur de petite taille Deep Roy (vu dans Charlie et la Chocolaterie ou le premier opus de Narnia) interprète Gus et fait également un cameo dans la scène du bar tiki. Les Hitchhiking Ghosts devaient avoir un rôle plus important dans une version antérieure du scénario, remplaçant le couple de serviteurs. Le personnage joué par Wallace Shawn s’appelle d’ailleurs Ezra. Bien que ce nom ne soit jamais prononcé dans le film, il est crédité comme tel au générique.
Le rôle de Ramsley, le majordome, a été proposé à l’acteur Anthony Hopkins qui l’a refusé. C’est finalement Terence Stamp qui l’incarnera. Son costume est d’ailleurs très largement inspiré de l’uniforme des Cast Members de Phantom Manor. Autre anecdote à propos des costumes, la veste que Master Gracey porte pour le mariage a été réutilisée plusieurs fois dans la série Once Upon A Time pour des figurants.
Des tombes issues directement de l’attraction apparaissent dans les décors de la scène du cimetière.
La réplique de Michael Evers « I see dead people » (je vois des gens qui sont morts) est un clin d’œil au film 6eme Sens et « Damn you all to hell » (Soyez tous maudits) prononcé par Ramsley est une ligne culte reprise de La Planète des Singes (1968)
Les quatre bustes chanteurs étaient initialement calqués sur l’apparence de Thurl Ravenscroft, Paul Frees, Marc Davis et Blaine Gibson. Pour une raison inconnue, seuls les deux premiers sont restés pour apparaître dans le film. Thurl Ravenscroft, que certains confondent avec Walt Disney à cause de leur ressemblance physique, est l’un des chanteurs et modèles des bustes de l’attraction. Il devait reprendre son rôle dans cette adaptation mais cela ne s’est pas fait à cause de sa santé déclinante due à son grand âge. Marc Davis et Blaine Gibson étaient des Imagineers ayant grandement participé à la création de l’attraction The Haunted Mansion et Paul Frees a été présenté plus haut. Le quatuor des Dapper Dans de Disneyland Californie ont doublé la chanson des bustes en VO pour le film.
S’incluant dans la tradition Disney, quelques Mickey cachés peuvent être aperçus dans le film : la forme du cadenas de la grille d’entrée, dans les vitraux des portes du couloir où Jim Evers se fait poursuivre par des instruments et sur la hallebarde de l’une des armures.

Secrets and Fun Facts : The Haunted Mansion Movie (2003)

As the teaser trailer of the next adaptation of The Haunted Mansion is out and receiving a lot of positive reactions, the 2003 movie with Eddie Murphy and directed by Rob Minkoff is back in the discussions. Some find it bad, others appreciate it and it is now old enough to be nostalgic. Anyway, there are some interesting things to say about this film. For the occasion, there is a collection of fun facts about this movie.
The film opens with the famous words «Welcome Foolish Mortals», pronounced by Corey Burton, the new official voice of the Ghost Host in the attraction after the death of Paul Frees, the original voice actor. However, Burton is not credited here for his participation.
The opening credits gives a lot of clues about the plot to careful spectators. The Tarot cards represent Death, the Lovers and three of Sword. More than announcing a death, Death is, above all, a synonym for change. On the lovers’ card, the woman turns into a skeleton, symbolizing the death of Elizabeth and the tree of sword means betrayal, that of Ramsley of course.
The teenager who delivers the Evers flyers at the beginning of the film is Zach Minkoff, the director’s nephew.
Several historical figures are scattered throughout the film’sets. Michael has a poster of the magician Harry Houdini in his bedroom, the bust that activates the secret passage in the library represents the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, and one of the changing paintings in the corridor is an equestrian portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Dwarf actor and stuntman Deep Roy (seen in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Chronicles of Narnia) plays Gus and also does a cameo in the tiki bar scene. The Hitchhiking Ghosts were supposed to have a more important role in an earlier draft of the scenario, replacing the couple of servants. The character played by Wallace Shawn is also called Ezra. Although this name is never pronounced in the film, he is credited as such at the end.
The role of Ramsley, the butler, was offered to actor Anthony Hopkins who refused it. Terence Stamp finally played it. His costume is also very largely inspired by the uniform of the Cast Members of Phantom Manor. Another anecdote about the costumes, the jacket worn by Master Gracey for the wedding has been reused several times in the show Once Upon A Time, for extras.
Some tombstones which comes directly from the attraction appear in the set of the cemetery scene.
Michael Evers’ line « I see dead people » is a nod to The 6th Sense movie and « Damn you all to hell » by Ramsley is a cult quote from Planet of the Apes (1968)
The four singing busts were originally modelled on the appearance of Thurl Ravenscroft, Paul Frees, Marc Davis and Blaine Gibson. For some unknown reason, only the first two remained to appear in the film. Thurl Ravenscroft, who some confuse with Walt Disney because of their physical resemblance, is one of the singers and models of the busts of the attraction. He was supposed to reprise his role in this adaptation but this didn’t happened because of his declining health due to his old age. Marc Davis and Blaine Gibson were Imagineers who contributed greatly to the creation of the attraction The Haunted Mansion and Paul Frees was presented above. The Dapper Dans Quartet from Disneyland California sang the busts song in the film.
Part of the Disney tradition, a few hidden Mickeys can be seen in the film: the shape of the lock of the entrance gate, in the windows of the hallway doors where Jim Evers is chased by instruments and on the halberd of one of the suits of armor.
